Understanding ERP

A supportive, evidence-based approach for managing anxiety and OCD.

What is ERP?
How ERP Works

ERP has two main parts:

Exposure: You gradually and intentionally face situations, thoughts, or sensations that trigger anxiety or uncertainty—always at a pace that feels manageable.

Response Prevention: You practice resisting the urge to engage in the usual rituals, avoidance behaviors, or reassurance-seeking that momentarily reduces anxiety but keeps the cycle going.

With consistent practice, your brain learns a new pattern:
the discomfort rises, you stay present, and it naturally fades on its own.

ERP is designed for:

  • Individuals living with OCD or anxiety disorders such as Agoraphobia, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, or Social Anxiety Disorder

  • People who suspect they may have OCD and want to explore next steps

  • Anyone who notices intrusive thoughts or repetitive behaviors that are hard to break

You do not need certainty, clarity, or a diagnosis to talk with someone about whether ERP may be helpful. Curiosity is enough.

Who Can Benefit From ERP?

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a well-established, evidence-based therapy designed to help people reduce anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and compulsive behaviors. It is considered the gold-standard treatment for OCD, but it can also support individuals who experience persistent doubt, fears, or repetitive patterns—whether or not they have a formal diagnosis.

ERP focuses on helping you gently build confidence in your ability to handle discomfort and uncertainty, one small step at a time.

ERP is not about “pushing through” fears or forcing yourself into overwhelming situations. It is not a test of willpower, and it is not a quick fix.

Instead, ERP is:

  • Collaborative – we make decisions together

  • Gradual – you choose your pace

  • Respectful – your comfort, identity, and values matter

  • Skills-based – you build tools to navigate anxiety long-term

Most people find that the process becomes empowering rather quickly.

What ERP Isn’t

ERP supports long-lasting change by:

  • Reducing the power of intrusive thoughts

  • Breaking unhelpful behavioral cycles

  • Strengthening tolerance for uncertainty

These shifts lead to greater freedom, confidence, and day-to-day ease.
